Why this collection exists

A ranked collection selected from across the Nutevio catalogue.

What defines these movies. The entries here run from the 1950s to the 2020s, and cover action, science fiction, crime, drama filmmaking across 37 directors. A film only earns a place if it does something the rest of the list cannot: a formal idea, a performance, an ending, or an influence you can still trace in the films being made today. Popularity gets a film considered. It never gets one ranked.

Who should explore it. If you have watched the obvious titles and want to know what sits underneath them, start at the top and read the notes rather than skimming the posters. If you are new to Best Action Movies, use the filters to narrow by decade or runtime and pick one film for tonight — every card tells you who it is for before you commit two hours.

How the ranking was determined. Each editor scores a film on craft, influence, rewatch value and how completely it delivers on its own premise. Those scores are argued out in full — the Nutevio Score you see on each card is the settled result, not an average of opinions. Where our score diverges from the audience consensus, the card says so and the note explains why. The ranking is revisited whenever a new release genuinely changes the conversation.

Twelve attributes averaged across every film here — the fingerprint of this ranking.

This collection reads as pacing-first, with action and rewatch value close behind. Romance is the one register it deliberately leaves alone.

Why it's ranked here — It rewrote how action is shot and edited.

The number one — extended editorial

                          Legacy

27 years on, The Matrix is still the title the rest of Best Action Movies is measured against. The entries below it share something with it — a structure, a silence, a way of holding a shot a beat past comfortable.

                          Cultural impact

The Matrix is unusually confident about what it asks of an audience: 136 minutes of action storytelling that never explains itself twice.

                          Lilly Wachowski on the material

Lilly Wachowski treats the material as if the audience is already paying attention, which is the whole trick. Nothing is repeated for the slow row at the back, and that trust is what makes the ending land.

                          Awards summary

No Academy Awards on record for this title — its standing here comes from how well it holds up, not from a ceremony.

It rewrote how action is shot and edited.

                          Editor's note

The Matrix is the entry our readers write to us about most. Half of those letters disagree with the placement. We read all of them and we have not changed our minds.

We nearly moved Inception three places in either direction, twice. It stayed because Christopher Nolan does one thing here that nobody has improved on since, and you will know it when you reach it.

As armies mass for a final battle that will decide the fate of the world--and powerful, ancient forces of Light and Dark compete to determine the outcome--one member of the Fellowship of the Ring is revealed as the noble heir to the throne of the Kings of Men. Yet, the sole hope for triumph over evil lies with a brave hobbit, Frodo, who, accompanied by his loyal friend Sam and the hideous, wretched Gollum, ventures deep into the very dark heart of Mordor on his seemingly impossible quest to destroy the Ring of Power.

                          Chapter 1 · Action craft

What action does at its best

                          1995–2010 · five demonstrations

The Matrix, Heat, Inception, The Dark Knight and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King are here for craft rather than reputation. Each one solves a specific action problem — how to sustain tension, how to earn a turn, how to end — and solves it in a way the rest of the list keeps borrowing.

The Matrix (1999) is the entry we would show someone who claims the genre is formulaic.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King closes the block.

Along the way, a fellowship is formed to protect the ringbearer and make sure that the ring arrives at its final destination: Mt. Doom, the only place where it can be destroyed.

Their destinies lie at two towers--Orthanc Tower in Isengard, where the corrupt wizard Saruman awaits, and Sauron's fortress at Barad-dur, deep within the dark lands of Mordor. Frodo and Sam are trekking to Mordor to destroy the One Ring of Power while Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn search for the orc-captured Merry and Pippin. All along, nefarious wizard Saruman awaits the Fellowship members at the Orthanc Tower in Isengard.

After getting a green card in exchange for assassinating a Cuban government official, Tony Montana stakes a claim on the drug trade in Miami. Viciously murdering anyone who stands in his way, Tony eventually becomes the biggest drug lord in the state, controlling nearly all the cocaine that comes through Miami. But increased pressure from the police, wars with Colombian drug cartels and his own drug-fueled paranoia serve to fuel the flames of his eventual downfall.

Spider-Man: No Way Home, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Zack Snyder's Justice League, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train and The Punisher: One Last Kill are here for craft rather than reputation. Each one solves a specific action problem — how to sustain tension, how to earn a turn, how to end — and solves it in a way the rest of the list keeps borrowing.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) is the entry we would show someone who claims the genre is formulaic.

                          Why these movies matter

Why these films matter: Best Action Movies spans 1954 to 2026, 37 filmmakers and 0 Academy Award winners, and it holds together because every entry is arguing for the same thing — that the way a story is told is the story. The Matrix states the case most completely; Castle in the Sky proves the case is still open.

What holds them together: the entries above share a preoccupation rather than a formula, and the ordering reflects how completely each one commits to it. Where two titles were inseparable, we broke the tie on how well the film holds up on a second viewing.

Where to go next: follow a director, follow a decade, or follow a mood. The recommendations below are scored on shared films, filmmakers, genres, themes and eras rather than picked at random, so each one continues a thread this collection started.
