Why this collection exists

A ranked collection selected from across the Nutevio catalogue.

What defines these movies. The entries here run from the 2010s to the 2020s, and cover mystery filmmaking across 1 director. A film only earns a place if it does something the rest of the list cannot: a formal idea, a performance, an ending, or an influence you can still trace in the films being made today. Popularity gets a film considered. It never gets one ranked.

Who should explore it. If you have watched the obvious titles and want to know what sits underneath them, start at the top and read the notes rather than skimming the posters. If you are new to Identity V STAGE Collection, use the filters to narrow by decade or runtime and pick one film for tonight — every card tells you who it is for before you commit two hours.

How we chose these. A ranked collection selected from across the Nutevio catalogue.

One night, a mortician passes through the gates of a manor. He says he came to this place because of an invitation, and the locals tell him some unbelievable things. First, he can never leave the manor. Second, a special "game" is held every day against terrifying hunters. Third, if you receive an invitation to the "game," you are confirmed to participate. You cannot escape. The mortician, who was caught up in it without any preparation or resolve, meets Joseph, a cold-hearted hunter, in his first game.

                          Legacy

Identity V STAGE Episode 1 [What to draw] Side:H (2019) is the entry we would put first for anyone coming straight from Identity V STAGE Collection. It picks up the same characters and the same central problem, so nothing about it feels like a detour.

                          Cultural impact

It also works as a standalone evening. 193 minutes, no homework required beyond the film you have just watched, and it resolves its own story rather than parking it for a sequel.

                          Unknown on the material

Unknown treats the material as if the audience is already paying attention, which is the whole trick. Nothing is repeated for the slow row at the back, and that trust is what makes the ending land.

                          Awards summary

No Academy Awards on record for this title — its standing here comes from how well it holds up, not from a ceremony.

Start here — everything else in this guide reads more clearly once you have seen it.

I have shown Identity V STAGE Episode 1 [What to draw] Side:H to people who insisted they did not like mystery films. It has never once failed. That is the closest thing to proof a ranking like this can offer.

A new hunter, Bloody Queen, arrives at the manor. Due to her expectations of royal treatment, she has trouble adjusting to life there. The Survivor Eli Clark reaches out to her, but in her tempestuous state of mind, she lashes out at him, and he becomes trapped in a mirror world. In the mirror world, all of the hunters and survivors have been reflected as courtiers and servants in the queen's castle. They do not remember their pasts, but Mary will not let the illusion break so that everyone can return to the manor. But under the glistening surface of constant parties and pleasure, a plot is brewing, and Eli realizes that he must convince Mary to let her illusions go before it is too late.

We nearly moved Identity V STAGE Episode 3 [Cry for the Moon] three places in either direction, twice. It stayed because Unknown does one thing here that nobody has improved on since, and you will know it when you reach it.

A four-on-one game of tag, win it and I shall grant you any wish. No matter what that "wish" is... Amidst the inexplicable games played between Survivors and Hunters within the manor, "that person" who should not exist has appeared. The Phantom. Before long, both Survivors and Hunters began to call him by that name. In order to solve the mystery, the Survivor "Prisoner" and the Hunters Wu Chang each begin to make their move. In the process, they will find themselves confronting their own pasts. Just what, exactly, is the Phantom?

How Identity V STAGE Episode 1 [What to draw] Side fits together

                          2019–2024 · the connective tissue

Identity V STAGE Episode 1 [What to draw] Side:H, Identity V STAGE Episode 1 [What to draw] Side:S, Identity V STAGE Episode 3 [Cry for the Moon], Identity V STAGE Episode 2 [Double Down] and Identity V STAGE Episode 4 [Phantom of the Monochrome] form one movement of the series. Watched in the order above, the plot threads hand off cleanly: Identity V STAGE Episode 1 [What to draw] Side:H (2019) sets a problem the later entries in this block are still working through.

Where the series changes hands creatively, it shows. Unknown directs the defining entry in this stretch, and the tonal shift is deliberate rather than accidental.

Identity V STAGE Episode 4 [Phantom of the Monochrome] closes the chapter and hands directly to Identity V STAGE Episode 6 [The Abyss of Art].

A recurring four-against-one game of “tag” at the manor. It was a stage with no final act, where neither survivors nor hunters could escape, each carrying their past and their desires. Edgar, a painter newly invited to the manor, finds himself in the midst of this life-or-death game, where he encounters raw inspiration that shakes him to his core. Facing him is Galatea, a sculptor who ceaselessly seeks her “perfect self” and is obsessed with a maddening ideal. The encounter between these two artists shines an even deeper light on the darkness within each of them. Will they ultimately seize what they desire? Or— will they sink into the abyss of art?

                          Why these movies matter

Why these films matter: Identity V STAGE Collection spans 2019 to 2026, 1 filmmakers and 0 Academy Award winners, and it holds together because every entry is arguing for the same thing — that the way a story is told is the story. Identity V STAGE Episode 1 [What to draw] Side:H states the case most completely; Identity V STAGE Episode 6 [The Abyss of Art] proves the case is still open.

What holds them together: the entries above share a preoccupation rather than a formula, and the ordering reflects how completely each one commits to it. Where two titles were inseparable, we broke the tie on how well the film holds up on a second viewing.

Where to go next: follow a director, follow a decade, or follow a mood. The recommendations below are scored on shared films, filmmakers, genres, themes and eras rather than picked at random, so each one continues a thread this collection started.
