Twelve attributes averaged across every film here — the fingerprint of this ranking.

This collection reads as mystery-first, with darkness and suspense close behind. Action is the one register it deliberately leaves alone.

The trademark of The Phantom, a renowned jewel thief, is a glove left at the scene of the crime. Inspector Clouseau, an expert on The Phantom's exploits, feels sure that he knows where The Phantom will strike next and leaves Paris for the Tyrolean Alps, where the famous Lugashi jewel 'The Pink Panther' is going to be. However, he does not know who The Phantom really is, or for that matter who anyone else really is...

                          Legacy

The Pink Panther (1963) is the entry we would put first for anyone coming straight from The Pink Panther (Original) Collection. It picks up the same characters and the same central problem, so nothing about it feels like a detour.

                          Cultural impact

It also works as a standalone evening. 115 minutes, no homework required beyond the film you have just watched, and it resolves its own story rather than parking it for a sequel.

                          Blake Edwards on the material

Blake Edwards treats the material as if the audience is already paying attention, which is the whole trick. Nothing is repeated for the slow row at the back, and that trust is what makes the ending land.

                          Awards summary

No Academy Awards on record for this title — its standing here comes from how well it holds up, not from a ceremony.

                          Editor's note

I have shown The Pink Panther to people who insisted they did not like comedy films. It has never once failed. That is the closest thing to proof a ranking like this can offer.

We nearly moved A Shot in the Dark three places in either direction, twice. It stayed because Blake Edwards does one thing here that nobody has improved on since, and you will know it when you reach it.

Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau is dead. At least that is what the world—and Charles Dreyfus—believe when a dead body is discovered in Clouseau's car after being shot off the road. Naturally, Clouseau knows differently and, taking advantage of not being alive, sets out to discover why an attempt was made on his life.

                          In conclusion

                          Why these movies matter

Why these films matter: The Pink Panther (Original) Collection spans 1963 to 1978, 1 filmmakers and 0 Academy Award winners, and it holds together because every entry is arguing for the same thing — that the way a story is told is the story. The Pink Panther states the case most completely; Revenge of the Pink Panther proves the case is still open.

What holds them together: the entries above share a preoccupation rather than a formula, and the ordering reflects how completely each one commits to it. Where two titles were inseparable, we broke the tie on how well the film holds up on a second viewing.

Where to go next: follow a director, follow a decade, or follow a mood. The recommendations below are scored on shared films, filmmakers, genres, themes and eras rather than picked at random, so each one continues a thread this collection started.
