Why this collection exists

A ranked collection selected from across the Nutevio catalogue.

What defines these movies. The entries here run from the 2010s to the 2020s, and cover action, crime, drama filmmaking across 1 director. A film only earns a place if it does something the rest of the list cannot: a formal idea, a performance, an ending, or an influence you can still trace in the films being made today. Popularity gets a film considered. It never gets one ranked.

Who should explore it. If you have watched the obvious titles and want to know what sits underneath them, start at the top and read the notes rather than skimming the posters. If you are new to Unification of Japan, use the filters to narrow by decade or runtime and pick one film for tonight — every card tells you who it is for before you commit two hours.

How the ranking was determined. A ranked collection selected from across the Nutevio catalogue.

Personality

Collection DNA

Twelve attributes averaged across every film here — the fingerprint of this ranking.

This collection reads as accessibility-first, with violence and suspense close behind. Mind-Bending is the one register it deliberately leaves alone.

Tetsuya Mikami, former leader of the Mikami-gumi group, took care of ex-convicts and people who had left the group so that they could reintegrate into society. However, an incident occurred in which a man working at his store was arrested on suspicion of murder and burglary after smoking shabu. Renji Himuro and Yuto Tamura have Nakajima and his friends investigate the source of the shabu.

                          Legacy

Unification of Japan 36 (2019) is the entry we would put first for anyone coming straight from Unification of Japan. It picks up the same characters and the same central problem, so nothing about it feels like a detour.

                          Cultural impact

It also works as a standalone evening. 72 minutes, no homework required beyond the film you have just watched, and it resolves its own story rather than parking it for a sequel.

                          Hiroyuki Tsuji on the material

Hiroyuki Tsuji treats the material as if the audience is already paying attention, which is the whole trick. Nothing is repeated for the slow row at the back, and that trust is what makes the ending land.

                          Awards summary

No Academy Awards on record for this title — its standing here comes from how well it holds up, not from a ceremony.

                          Editor's note

We nearly moved Unification of Japan 36 three places in either direction, twice. It stayed because Hiroyuki Tsuji does one thing here that nobody has improved on since, and you will know it when you reach it.

                          2019–2020 · the connective tissue

Unification of Japan 36, Unification of Japan 37, Unification of Japan 39, Unification of Japan 41 and Unification of Japan 42 form one movement of the series. Watched in the order above, the plot threads hand off cleanly: Unification of Japan 36 (2019) sets a problem the later entries in this block are still working through.

Where the series changes hands creatively, it shows. Hiroyuki Tsuji directs the defining entry in this stretch, and the tonal shift is deliberate rather than accidental.

Unification of Japan 42 closes the chapter and hands directly to Unification of Japan Episode Collection IV: Two Young Bloods.

                          Why these movies matter

Why these films matter: Unification of Japan spans 2019 to 2023, 1 filmmakers and 0 Academy Award winners, and it holds together because every entry is arguing for the same thing — that the way a story is told is the story. Unification of Japan 36 states the case most completely; Unification of Japan: Kanto Edition proves the case is still open.

What holds them together: the entries above share a preoccupation rather than a formula, and the ordering reflects how completely each one commits to it. Where two titles were inseparable, we broke the tie on how well the film holds up on a second viewing.

Where to go next: follow a director, follow a decade, or follow a mood. The recommendations below are scored on shared films, filmmakers, genres, themes and eras rather than picked at random, so each one continues a thread this collection started.
