Why this collection exists

There are horror movies that are fun, horror movies that are clever, and horror movies that actually make you uncomfortable turning the lights off afterward. This collection is about the last kind.

These 20 films approach fear from very different directions. Some rely on ghosts you barely see. Others use possession, curses, grief, folklore or the suggestion that something terrible is standing just outside the frame. A few are loud and immediate; others take their time and let the uneasiness build.

What connects them is effectiveness. These aren't here simply because they're famous horror movies. They're here because each one has at least one scene, image or idea capable of following you home.

And while fear is personal, we've tried to cover enough different kinds of horror that almost everyone should find something here that gets under their skin.

How We Chose These

We weren't looking for the bloodiest movies or the ones with the highest body counts. A movie ranked higher when its scares remained effective beyond the initial shock.

Atmosphere mattered. So did sound, imagery, suspense and the ability to make ordinary places—a bedroom, hallway, television or dark corner—feel unsafe. We also considered how well each film holds up once you know what's coming.

The ranking deliberately mixes American horror with films from Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia and Taiwan. Horror travels remarkably well, but different filmmaking traditions have very different ideas about what should frighten us.

Most importantly, this isn't a ranking of the "best horror movies ever made." It's a ranking built around a simpler question:
