Nutevio Editorial Analysis
Why Goodfellas works
Scorsese films organised crime as a lifestyle brochure and then lets the reader keep reading past the good part. For ninety minutes it is the most seductive film ever made about belonging; for the last forty it is a nervous breakdown shot on a helicopter schedule.
The Copacabana Steadicam shot is famous for craft reasons, but its purpose is seduction: it makes the audience feel what Karen feels, that this world simply opens for you.
Thelma Schoonmaker's editing is the performance. Freeze frames, jump cuts, narration that interrupts itself — the grammar accelerates exactly as Henry's control disintegrates.
The final shot of Henry in a bathrobe, complaining about spaghetti with ketchup, is Scorsese's punchline and his verdict: the punishment for this life is having to live an ordinary one.
