Why this collection exists

A ranked collection selected from across the Nutevio catalogue.

What defines these movies. The entries here run from the 2010s, and cover comedy, drama, thriller, science fiction filmmaking across 42 directors. A film only earns a place if it does something the rest of the list cannot: a formal idea, a performance, an ending, or an influence you can still trace in the films being made today. Popularity gets a film considered. It never gets one ranked.

Who should explore it. If you have watched the obvious titles and want to know what sits underneath them, start at the top and read the notes rather than skimming the posters. If you are new to Best Movies of the 2010s, use the filters to narrow by decade or runtime and pick one film for tonight — every card tells you who it is for before you commit two hours.

How the ranking was determined. Each editor scores a film on craft, influence, rewatch value and how completely it delivers on its own premise. Those scores are argued out in full — the Nutevio Score you see on each card is the settled result, not an average of opinions. Where our score diverges from the audience consensus, the card says so and the note explains why. The ranking is revisited whenever a new release genuinely changes the conversation.

                          The decade's most perfect screenplay.

Why it's ranked here — Genre-fluid, politically precise, endlessly rewatchable.

                          Legacy

7 years on, Parasite is still the title the rest of Best Movies of the 2010s is measured against. The entries below it share something with it — a structure, a silence, a way of holding a shot a beat past comfortable.

                          Cultural impact

Parasite is unusually confident about what it asks of an audience: 133 minutes of comedy storytelling that never explains itself twice.

Bong Joon Ho on the material

Bong Joon Ho treats the material as if the audience is already paying attention, which is the whole trick. Nothing is repeated for the slow row at the back, and that trust is what makes the ending land.

                          Awards summary

No Academy Awards on record for this title — its standing here comes from how well it holds up, not from a ceremony.

                          Genre-fluid, politically precise, endlessly rewatchable.

                          Editor's note

We nearly moved Parasite three places in either direction, twice. It stayed because Bong Joon Ho does one thing here that nobody has improved on since, and you will know it when you reach it.

I have shown Interstellar to people who insisted they did not like science fiction films. It has never once failed. That is the closest thing to proof a ranking like this can offer.

                          Chapter 1 · The 2010–2019 block

                          What 2010–2019 was actually making

                          Five films, one production climate

Parasite, Interstellar, Blade Runner 2049, Whiplash and Inception were released between 2010–2019, and they share a production climate more than a subject. Drama filmmaking in this window was being asked to do something new, and these are the films that answered.

Parasite opens the block and Inception closes it; between them you can watch the register shift within a handful of years.

The last films before the form moved on

By the time Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) arrived, the approach that defined this period was already being replaced. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Your Name., Avengers: Infinity War, The Intouchables and Avengers: Endgame are the entries that saw it coming.

That is why they sit here rather than higher: they are transitional, and transitional films are usually more interesting than they are complete.

                          What 2010–2018 was actually making

                          Five films, one production climate

Coco, Django Unchained, Shutter Island, Hacksaw Ridge and Green Book were released between 2010–2018, and they share a production climate more than a subject. Drama filmmaking in this window was being asked to do something new, and these are the films that answered.

Coco opens the block and Green Book closes it; between them you can watch the register shift within a handful of years.

Aibileen Clark is a middle-aged African-American maid who has spent her life raising white children and has recently lost her only son; Minny Jackson is an African-American maid who has often offended her employers despite her family's struggles with money and her desperate need for jobs; and Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan is a young white woman who has recently moved back home after graduating college to find out her childhood maid has mysteriously disappeared. These three stories intertwine to explain how life in Jackson, Mississippi revolves around "the help"; yet they are always kept at a certain distance because of racial lines.

We nearly moved The Help three places in either direction, twice. It stayed because Tate Taylor does one thing here that nobody has improved on since, and you will know it when you reach it.

Where the period starts to end

The last films before the form moved on

By the time Joker (2019) arrived, the approach that defined this period was already being replaced. Joker, The Avengers, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, A Silent Voice: The Movie and The Help are the entries that saw it coming.

That is why they sit here rather than higher: they are transitional, and transitional films are usually more interesting than they are complete.

                          What 2013–2017 was actually making

                          Five films, one production climate

Prisoners, The Wolf of Wall Street, Call Me by Your Name, The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game were released between 2013–2017, and they share a production climate more than a subject. Drama filmmaking in this window was being asked to do something new, and these are the films that answered.

Prisoners opens the block and The Imitation Game closes it; between them you can watch the register shift within a handful of years.

                          Why these movies matter

Why these films matter: Best Movies of the 2010s spans 2010 to 2019, 42 filmmakers and 0 Academy Award winners, and it holds together because every entry is arguing for the same thing — that the way a story is told is the story. Parasite states the case most completely; The Hunt proves the case is still open.

What holds them together: the entries above share a preoccupation rather than a formula, and the ordering reflects how completely each one commits to it. Where two titles were inseparable, we broke the tie on how well the film holds up on a second viewing.

Where to go next: follow a director, follow a decade, or follow a mood. The recommendations below are scored on shared films, filmmakers, genres, themes and eras rather than picked at random, so each one continues a thread this collection started.
