Why Blade Runner 2049 works
Villeneuve's sequel takes the one thing the original left implicit — that a manufactured person might want to be someone's child — and builds a three-hour detective story around it.
Roger Deakins finally won his Oscar for photography that treats light as weather: the amber Las Vegas dust, the interrogation-room ripple, the orphanage haze. Almost every environment is a real set with real atmosphere in it.
The film's emotional trick is to give K a miracle and then take it away. He is not the chosen one; he chooses anyway. That inversion is what earns the last shot in the snow.
Commercially it underperformed, which says more about a market that wanted spectacle than about a film that offered patience.
