Why Inception works
Inception is a heist film that mistrusts its own genre pleasures. Nolan builds a set of rules — dream levels, kicks, the shared architecture of the subconscious — and then uses the machinery to smuggle in a story about a man who cannot stop rebuilding a dead woman.
The film's formal achievement is legibility. Four simultaneous timelines running at different speeds should be incomprehensible; instead the cross-cutting is so disciplined that a van falling off a bridge functions as a clock everyone in the audience can read.
Wally Pfister's photography keeps the dream worlds sharply, almost banally real — hotel corridors, snow fortresses, wet Parisian streets — because the concept only works if nothing looks like a dream. The rotating corridor was a practical 100-foot centrifuge, and it shows.
The final shot has been argued about for over a decade, which is exactly its function: the question is not whether the top falls but whether Cobb still cares. He walks away from it. That is the ending.
